“I’m not trying to,” Cobalt said. “Just trying to kill the ones who think no one will stop them.”

Miguel studied him. “That’s a lonely kind of justice.”

“Yeah. Well. So is dying in a locked room because some diplomat got paid not to care.”

The priest didn’t argue.

Three days later, the Blue Lotus retaliated.

They firebombed the safehouse just after dusk. Two kids burned alive. Miguel took a round to the chest dragging a girl out of the flames. Cobalt killed six of them in the alley before his clip went dry. The seventh he strangled with his bare hands.

After the smoke cleared, he stood in the rubble, coughing blood, holding Kaiya under his coat as she clung to him like driftwood. She didn’t cry. Didn’t blink. But this time, she was looking at him. Seeing him. Whatever wall they’d built inside her cracked in the fire.

Later, at a makeshift camp run by an underground orphan network, he handed her off to a woman named Lin, who promised she’d get her papers and a real home across the border. He almost believed her.

Kaiya stopped at the edge of the truck, turned, and said one word: “Promise?”

Cobalt nodded. “You have my word.”

It tasted like ash in his mouth. He’d made too many promises in this life. Too many broken by bullets, betrayals, and bureaucrats. But this one—this one mattered.

She disappeared into the dust, the engine rattling away like a heartbeat in retreat.

That night, Cobalt sat alone by the river, bleeding from a cut he hadn’t noticed, watching Phnom Penh glisten like a mirage across the water. He lit a cigarette. Let the smoke curl around him like a prayer he no longer believed in.

He remembered what the Monk had told him, years ago, in a cave above Chiang Mai:

“When the world breaks a child, a warrior may lift them. But only love can rebuild them.”

He hadn’t believed it then. Still didn’t, not completely. But maybe that was the point. You don’t have to believe in the light. You just have to keep walking toward it.

Story: The Village

Vietnam, 1969-70.Quảng Ngãi Province. Delta sector.

Humidity like soup. Blood like rust in the air.

Cobalt had been operating under MACV-SOG—Special Operations Group—but you’d never find his name in the briefings. He was the ghost in the wire, the eyes behind the recon reports. Off-book. Embedded for observation and intelligence collection. That was the line. But Vietnam didn’t care about lines. It blurred everything.

He’d been riding with Charlie-Echo for three weeks. Long enough to know the squad was cracking. Long enough to know Monroe was the wrong man to give orders in a war where there were no rules.

Monroe was tall, Southern, always grinning. He called the locals “ducks” and thought Geneva was a town in Texas. His boys followed him because he bought the first round and gave them permission to become animals.

Cobalt didn’t follow him. He followed the pattern. And the pattern said this unit was getting sloppy.

It was a dawn sweep. Intel—questionable at best—said an NVA courier had passed through a hamlet along the Son Tra River. Nine huts, two fishing boats, zero resistance.

Monroe gave the order:

“Sweep it clean.”

To the grunts, that meant one thing: burn it down.

Cobalt knew the smell before he saw the smoke—flesh and gasoline, the stench of something sacred being torched. He moved through the village perimeter, hand on his sidearm, camera tucked under his blouse.

He heard the first shot before he saw the body. A girl, maybe ten. Head snapped back like a puppet with its strings cut. No gun in her hands. No danger. Just mud and screams and blood soaking into the straw.

Inside the main hut, Monroe was kneeling over an old man, punching his face in with the butt of an M16.

“Tell me where the VC are, old fuck!”The man didn’t speak English. That didn’t stop the rifle stock.

Cobalt snapped the shutter once. Then again.

Another soldier—Rodriguez—was dragging a woman out by her hair, laughing. Another was pouring kerosene on a rice bag like it was sport.

Cobalt didn’t intervene. That wasn't the mission. His mission was to witness.

So he watched.
He documented.
He didn’t stop it.

And that was the part that kept him up at night.

That night, in the bunker, he sent the film through an encrypted pouch. Red-coded dispatch. High-priority. Straight to the command node at Da Nang.

He expected silence. He didn’t expect retribution.

Three days later, Monroe pulled him into a radio shack behind the firebase.

“You think you’re some kind of hero?” Monroe asked.“I think you murdered civilians,” Cobalt replied.“I think you don’t understand how we win this war.”

The smile was gone.

Monroe leaned close, voice low:

“You try to take me down, I take you with me. Nobody’s hands are clean in this place, soldier.”

That night, Cobalt’s cot was gone. His locker trashed. His name struck from the flight manifest. A week later, they reassigned him to a clerical post near Bien Hoa—filling out ration forms while Monroe kept killing villagers under a different codename.

The message was clear: shut up, or disappear.

Cobalt didn’t shut up.

He made copies of the photos. Stashed them in water-tight tubes. One went to a priest in Saigon. One went to a French journalist who owed him a favor. The last, he mailed to himself under a false name at a New York PO box.

Then he vanished.

The story hit three months later.

Years later—1975—when the hearings were long over and the war was ending in shame, Cobalt stood outside the federal building in D.C. It was spring, but the air still tasted like war. Wet concrete and burnt paper. 

Different haircut, different beard, different experience, same eyes.

A newscaster spotted him. He recognized the eyes.

“You were part of the investigation, right?”“I was the investigation.”“You’re not in the files.”“Good.”

She looked confused.

“Why blow the whistle and disappear?”“Because if I stayed, I’d be dead. And the story would’ve died with me.”

She looked at him, hesitating, then asked the question every reporter asks:

“So after everything they did to you... why did you do it?”

Cobalt looked past her. Past the glass doors. Past the seal of justice etched in the stone.

Then he spoke, slow and clean:

“Because the truth, respectfully, is not a threat—it is my constitutional right.”

He didn’t wait for her to scribble it down.

He just walked away.

Boots steady. Shoulders straight.Another war behind him.Another truth that didn’t go quietly.

He could still fear the jungle, distant oratory notes of rot, fear and death.

But at least he was able to lay his sword down.

Postscript: This story is fiction. The truth it carries is not. The names have been changed. Except one. The bones beneath them haven’t.

James Cobalt didn’t believe in earning it. Not anymore. He believed in leverage. And leverage is cold math: who needs who, and for how long.

Ray Santiago needed him.
That’s why Cobalt was already sitting in the safehouse, boots on the table, revolver cleaned and reloaded with three .38 rounds. Just three. The rest he’d left in the trash. Symbolic.

The fan above ticked like a metronome. It was just past midnight when the knock came—two short, one long. Their signal.

Ray stepped in looking like a ghost that hadn’t slept in weeks. Gaunt, twitchy, eyes darting.

“You alone?” Cobalt asked.

Ray nodded, but didn’t meet his eyes. He dropped the black duffel on the floor. It sagged like an empty lung.

Cobalt raised an eyebrow. “That all of it?”

“Count it if you don’t believe me.”

“I already did.” He hadn’t, but he didn’t need to. Ray was always light, in money and morals.

Ray flinched, the way liars do when the ground moves under them. He went for the fridge, grabbed two beers. Cracked them both. Offered one to Cobalt like old times. Cobalt accepted it, then wiped the rim with his sleeve.

“I heard about what happened in Phnom Penh,” Ray said, slumping into the opposite chair. “Hell of a mess.”

“Yeah.” Cobalt took a sip, watching him. “Mess I cleaned up.”

Ray fidgeted. “Look, I know you don’t trust me—”

“I don’t need to trust you. You were useful.”

Ray bristled, then laughed to cover it. “Still the same cold bastard.”

Silence grew between them. Thick. Sticky.

Then Ray reached for the duffel again.

That was the moment. The point of no return.

Cobalt moved like smoke. The revolver was in his hand, cocked, leveled. Ray froze. Wide eyes. Sweat beading.

“Don’t,” Cobalt said flatly. “Just don’t.”

Ray raised both hands. “Jesus, man. I was just gonna show you what I brought.”

“I already know what you brought.” He stood up slowly. “Nothing but excuses and an early grave.”

Ray swallowed. “So what, you gonna shoot me?”

Cobalt spun the cylinder and let it click to a stop.

“Three bullets. Two of us. Let’s see how lucky you feel.”

Ray paled. “You’re out of your goddamn mind.”

Cobalt smiled. “Maybe. Or maybe I’m just tired of being polite to traitors.”

He raised the gun.

Click.

Ray gasped.

Cobalt stepped closer. “One down.”

Ray’s voice cracked. “Don’t do this, man. We go back.”

“You went back,” Cobalt said. “I moved forward.”

He pulled the trigger again.

Click.

Ray nearly collapsed in relief. “You’re bluffing.”

“One round left.” Cobalt leaned in close. “Want to bet your life I didn’t save it for last?”

That’s when Ray broke. His body trembled. “Fine! You’re right. I shorted the bag. I owed a guy in Manila. I was gonna pay you back—”

“You just did,” Cobalt cut in.

He turned and walked to the door.

Ray blinked. “What…? That’s it?”

Cobalt stopped at the threshold. “You think this was about the money?”

“Then why the head games?”

Cobalt looked over his shoulder, eyes hard as tempered steel. “Because I needed to know if you were worth saving. You’re not.”

He tossed a folded note onto the table. Ray picked it up with shaking hands.

“You have one hour. I suggest you use it.”

By the time Ray stumbled to the window, the alley was empty. No bike. No sound.

Just three spent casings on the table.

Three blanks.

The real cash was already stashed in a rusted fuel drum by the riverside—bagged, sealed, and gone. Cobalt had never intended to share it. Not after Manila. Not after Bangkok. Not after watching Ray sell out a girl for a passport and a ten-percent cut.

Cobalt didn’t do revenge. He did closure.

And closure was a one-way street.
